On a slightly overcast morning, my husband and I found ourselves in the little village of Topsham (UK), just a short hop from Exeter. It’s not a large place: A couple of shops, a handful of galleries and a large antiques centre that begs you to lose an hour or two.
Topsham sits on the River Exe, its estuary views opening wide to the sky. Once a historic port, it was granted town status as far back as 1300, and its rich maritime history is still written in the old warehouses and quayside cottages. There’s a certain salt-and-timber feeling to the place, as if the river breeze carries whispers of trading ships long gone.
After a little exploring, we set out along “The Goatpath,” a small and beautiful trail tracing the coast. The path led us past a wide stretch of water, mudflats alive with bird calls and pockets of wildflowers nodding in the wind. Cyclists and nature lovers will surely love it here as much as we did.
By the time we returned it was lunchtime, so we sat down at a water view pub and ate some steak with chips. It was truly a lovely visit.
